1. Rip out magazine sheets that have lots of color in them, and color that goes all the way to the edges. The edge is what will be seen.
2. Flip over the page you want to use and start folding corner to corner diagonally (almost like rolling it, but flattened). Figure out how wide you want your slats before you begin, and make them uniform in width. (I made a card stock strip about 1 inch wide and used that to fold the magazine pictures around.)
3. Once you have folded it to the end, tape the last flap over.
4. Tape the slats end to end, until you have one really long strip.
5. Run glue along an end part of the finished slat and then start to roll, as tightly as you can, to create a base for the bowl. You DO NOT want to glue all the slats together, as you’ll want them to move so you can bring the sides up to make the bowl shape.
6. It works like a collapsible cup or bowl. It will look like a big thick spiral of paper with the glued base in the middle. Hold it tightly wound, and push the base out from the center. Push your thumbs in the middle and use your fingers to pull up the sides. That will create the bowl.
7. You can continue to attach slats until you reach your desired size. (Hint: It takes LOTS of slats to make a good sized bowl.)
8. Now tape the top edge to keep it nice and tight.
9. Cover with Modge Podge OR white school glue to make it hold the shape.
If you want to take a break, secure the coil of slats by wrapping two rubber bands around it, so they criss cross.
